Oil pastels are one of those mediums that either you can carry them around in your backpack for everyday use or you can teach classes about. Some people love to use it, and some don’t. Yet, when someone tries oil pastels for the first time, it is hard for him/her to create an object which looks beautiful. He/She tends to mix it with other types of colours (frequently crayons). Well, here are the few tips which will help you in working with the oil pastels:
1. Heavy Pressure Blending
Generously add one color at a time onto paper, blending the colors together to create a rich and blended texture. Experiment by adding various shades of black or white for shadowing or highlighting effects. This quick lesson can help you learn this technique in no time!
2. Light Pressure Blending
For a unique artwork that is unlike anything you have ever seen before, try adding oil pastels on paper with little pressure yet still getting various colors. Layer more colors for your different values or even different hues.
3. Color Mixing
Apply a rich layering of oil pastels onto your paper, working with one color at a time. Consider using a single primary color e.g. red , blue or yellow when studying artwork created by children and mixing the pastels together to create secondary colors -orange, pink and green before applying them on top. You could then continue this technique with combinations of additional colors such as browns, yellows and greens to create the warm, natural look for your landscapes.
4. Stippling
Using small, choppy strokes, paint a stippled effect on your canvas. Layer additional colors for depth within your technique.
5. Scumbling
Build up with additional layers of oil pastel to reach a desired value and texture. Apply controlled, scribbled marks of oil pastel prior to doing this.
6. Sgraffito
Mix two different types of landscape oil pastel or color pencils and lay them down on a sheet of paper. Scratch away at the top layers using a tool like a pen or wooden stylus until you reveal the colors below!
7. Oil
For more pigment, mix your oil pastels with a small amount of oil or baby oil. Coat your paper with the liquid and then apply the dry pastels to get more vibrant colors. Let dry overnight so that the color mixes better and you have a smoother texture.
