The incidence of obesity has multiplied in the last few decades. Abnormal or excess fat accumulation in different parts of the body can not only affect a person’s appearance, but can also lead to severe metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In India, more than 5 crore people are affected by obesity and other metabolic problems that come with it.

Everyone from young to old suffers from obesity. This may be due to our lifestyle, genetics and eating habits. On this World Obesity Day, learn about obesity risk factors and ways to manage the condition in this article.

Obesity – Risk Factors, Treatments & Complications

The male system, also known as the Android system, is the worst of the two. This is because the fat distribution is around the waist. The fat around the abdomen is called visceral fat or bad fat. This type of fat is deep within the tissues and is often associated with a variety of health problems such as stroke and kidney problems.

In female form or kinoid obesity, fat distribution is not only around the waist but also in other areas such as the hips and thighs. This type of fat is less dangerous. This is because it is associated with metabolic problems that come with obesity.

Contrary to popular belief, obesity is not just the result of overeating or lifestyle problems. Obesity should be considered a disease. Poor diet alone does not lead to obesity. The balance between energy intake and energy consumption is multifaceted and obesity can increase due to genetic, hormonal disorder, or psychological problems.

Measuring if you are obese is not as easy as jumping on a weight scale. The perfect way to do this is by measuring BMI. BMI is the ratio of height to weight. The best BMI varies by age and race.

Even in children, BMI is used to measure obesity. But this is more complicated than growing up. You can buy BMI charts and then compare the BMI according to age and race and get the exact numbers.
