To assist on your journey of healthy aging, here are seven tips to help you practice healthy aging:
- Exercise
Engagement of the body is one of the ways of aging healthy. Exercising doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym or lifting weights. Exercise comes in different forms. A good example, yoga is a form of exercise that doesn’t need one to go to the gym, all that is required is a mat and a ready mind. Other exercises can also be tried out, like aerobic exercises. Exercise also assists the body in preventing health problems and reduces fatigue.
Task: Pick out a time during the day to find a convenient exercise, start the exercise during your selected time and follow through at least 3-4 times a week.
Example: 7-8 am Jogging and yoga, 4-5 pm calisthenics, 8-9 aerobics.
- Rest well
This is an activity most people take for granted; they believe it’s a waste of valuable time which is false. Adequate sleep is a core part of being healthy. Your busy schedule and important meetings must always include getting a night of good sleep and mind relaxation. At least 6-8 hours of adequate sleep within the 24 hours of the day is required for healthy living as it keeps the body agile and readies the brain for the next round of activities ahead. A good rest, in many cases, can cure body pains, headaches, and tiredness.
Task: Select the best time to go off work and get a good sleep at night and what time you choose to wake up, and set the alarm for each hour respectively as a reminder. Practice this every day until the body is used to this sleep schedule.
Example: Sleep at 10 pm, wake up at 5 am
- Balanced Diet
Food is needed to survive, and everybody eats. However, the concern is more about eating rightly and healthily. It is important to eat nutritious and nourishing food as that gives the body the required level of energy needed for its physiological activities.
When you eat well, it’s easier to stay healthy. A balanced diet is essential for reducing the risk of sickness and disease. Ensure that your food has the right proportion of carbohydrates, proteins, vegetables/grains, vitamins, and water. Avoid junk foods as much as possible because many contain harmful additives.
Task:
I. Eat fruits before or after each meal of the day.
II. Ensure there are vegetables or protein in two of your daily meals.
III. Take at least two liters (eight glasses) of water every day.
Example: After Breakfast, eat an apple. After lunch, eat watermelon and an apple before dinner.
4. Socialize
Socializing brings out the fun and happy side in people and greatly reduces stress. Family picnics, occasional hangouts, movies, dates, and dinners would make the heart merry and keep the mind alert. Socializing helps reduce depression, anxiety, and stress, giving you healthy mental health.
Task: Attend at least one social event every week and if there isn’t any social event, visit any of your friends or colleagues.
5. Do what makes you happy
Being happy can’t be over-emphasized as a way to age healthily. Constant joy, happiness, and peace of mind clear stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression, which is a thumbs-up for mental health. A healthy mentality is healthy aging.
Task: Just make sure you do what makes you happy when the opportunity shows.
6. Get a Hobby
Having a hobby is both good for the brain and the body. It brings mental and physical engagement. The brain is working yet not stressed, making it active. Football, basketball, sports generally, art, singing, dancing, Scrabble, and many more are examples of different hobbies that can be engaged in adding to daily activities.
Task: Find a new hobby today and if you already have, try and do it every week, and be more involved and intentional about the hobby.
Example: Play Football with neighbors on Saturdays, visit the recreational center and play chess, scrabble or learn a new food recipe.
7. Visit the family doctor regularly

Regular visitation to the doctor’s office helps to reduce the risk of any health issues. Follow the doctor’s advice and prescription (if any), go for the slated check-up without missing any day, and be sure to call when not feeling too good.
Task: Go for monthly medical check-ups and interact with your doctor.
Healthy aging is directly equivalent to living healthy. Healthy living greatly reduces the risk of various illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc.
