If it wasn’t for the invention of football in the mid-1800s, there is a very good chance that cricket would have enjoyed the dominance and would have commanded the attention of the world today. Over 2 billion people all around the globe tune in to watch their favorite cricket teams play in the most prestigious tournaments. Sports websites cover the game extensively, and bookmakers put a lot of care into formulating the best odds.
The sport is especially popular in South Asia. In India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, it is the uncontested most popular sport. The game was introduced to this region during Great Britain’s rule, and has remained as an important part of the cultures of each of these countries.
According to many websites which revolve around sports, online cricket betting in the region is on the rise, and the clubs and teams from South Asia tend to excel at the sport. Among these teams, one of the most successful is Bangladesh’ national team. In this article, we are going to go through Bangladesh’s team’s history, and discuss their highs and maybe their lows.
Overall Standing
Since 1999, Bangladesh has been included as one of the top 10 national teams in the world of cricket. The year also marked the team’s qualification for the World Cup, which they have never once failed to qualify for since. The International Cricket Conference ranks the national teams in all three different divisions of cricket. According to these rankings, Bangladesh remains in the top 10 of each of the three categories.
The first category is the Test cricket team rankings. Out of the top 10 teams in the world, Bangladesh is ranked nine. In 19 matches they have scored 966 points and were given a 51 rating. This may fall behind some of the more accomplished teams, like India, Australia and South Africa, however, it is leagues ahead of the 10th ranked team, Zimbabwe, who only have 6 matches played and less than 150 points.
In the ODI ranking, Bangladesh is ranked 7th. This is their best ranking currently, and they have been given a rating of 95, only 4 points behind South Africa, who are ranked 6th. In 24 matches, they have racked up close to 2300 points.
Lastly is the T20I team rankings, where the team is ranked 8th, with 33 matches, over 7500 points and a rating of 233. Truly an impressive track record.
The High Point
So we can see that Bangladesh has had quite an illustrious history in cricket, that still is ongoing today. But the question is, what is the team’s highpoint? In this section, we are going to take a look at the time that that Bangladesh managed to defeat three of the world’s top ranked teams during the 2015 World Cup in Cricket.
While it was Australia that won the title (their 5th at the time), Bangladesh earned itself the respect of the entire cricket-watching world, when they manage to get a win against England, and outright defeat the Pakistani team (with a score of 3 – 0) and the Indian team (with a score of 2 – 1). At the time, and still today, all three of these teams are ranked higher than Bangladesh according to the ICC. So the team’s victory was all the more impressive and remains impressive to date. On top of that, they also defeated South Africa 2 – 1 in an ODI series, which earned them a spot in the Champions Trophy of 2017.
Conclusion
Bangladesh remains one of the most successful countries in the world when it comes to international cricket competitions. They have seen some rather high highs, and not many lows. They have remained in the top 10 rankings of all three different cricket formats since 1999, and have never failed to qualify for the World Cup.
