Caution: In the United Kingdom, it is currently illegal to ride electric scooters on pavements and public roads (without a license and insurance). The following advice applies to cities such as Paris and Madrid where they are currently legal. We hope the UK will follow suit soon.
Electric scooters have become a symbol of modern urban transport; they’re a common sight in large cities such as Paris, Madrid, and San Francisco. The trend looks set to continue growing! While we believe this recent surge in popularity is great, we also think it’s important to be aware of both the pros and cons of using electric scooters before making the decision to start using them yourself.
1. Portability
Electric scooters are a great mode of powered transportation that is portable and easy to use. Many people find other forms of assisted transportation, such as motorbikes, to be too cumbersome or difficult to operate. Electric scooters are a great compromise between the two – they are light and easy to fold up, so you can take them with you without having to worry about them being stolen. They also don’t require a license or insurance, so anyone can use them.
2. Eco-friendly
We can’t write an article about the pros of electric scooters without mentioning the environment. The era-defining geopolitical story of our time is climate change. Our collective search for more environmentally-friendly modes of transport and reduced emissions is seeing some progress, with electric scooters being one of the frontrunners so far. They only use a small amount of electricity and don’t emit any emissions, which is fantastic news for the environment!
3. Noise pollution
City life and silence are two concepts that rarely go hand-in-hand. Any method of transportation in a city typically comes with a high level of noise pollution – cars, motorbikes, buses, trains, etc. are all incredibly loud. Even walking can be noisy if you have hard-soled shoes on! Electric scooters offer a mode of transportation that is much quieter than any other option. They are fast and quiet, making them the best way to get from one place to another quickly and without all the noise.
We know that many people have experienced having a neighbour who works very early or very late hours. When they come home late at night or leave early in the morning, it can be quite disruptive. With an electric scooter, however, you won’t have to worry about disturbing your neighbours because they are so quiet!
4. Balance + movement
One of the issues mankind is currently facing is our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Many of us have office jobs that require us to sit down for long periods of time, and then we have to commute to and from work, which is usually done by car or public transport. With modern technology, we can socialize without leaving our homes, which means we don’t have to move around as much. This can make it difficult to find time to exercise. An electric scooter can be a great solution for shorter journeys that you would normally do by car or public transport.
5. Safety
Any mode of transport comes with an inherent level of risk, but some moreso than others. For example, when you travel any faster than a walking pace, your risk of having an accident automatically increases – even something as innocuous as tripping or bumping into someone whilst jogging. When compared with other personal modes of transport, such as cycling, roller skating, or using hoverboards, scooters are potentially the safer option because you can simply step off if you see an imminent collision occurring. This is something you can’t do with bikes or roller skates,
