Harivansh Rai Bachchan Biography: Harivansh Roy Bachchan was born on November 27, 1907, in Bapupatti, near Allahabad, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the eldest son of Pratap Narayan Srivastava and Goddess Saraswati.

He began his primary education in a municipal school. He then started learning Urdu from Kayastha Patshals, pursuing higher education from Allahabad University and Banaras Hindu University. After working as a lecturer in English Literature at Allahabad University in 1941 for about ten years, he went to England for higher studies in 1952 and obtained his ‘Ph.D.’ from the University of Cambridge.

He returned to India after completing his doctorate in the UK and resumed his teaching career. At the same time, he sometimes worked for All India Radio in Allahabad. He then moved to Delhi in 1955 and joined the Indian Ministry of External Affairs as a Special Officer in the Hindi Language.

He worked there for about ten years. When Hindi became the official language of India, he was tasked with translating into Hindi some of the most historically significant books on the subject, such as the Mohammedan, Othello, Bhagavad Gita, and the Rupayat.

Madhushala, a book of Hindi poetry published in 1935, not only brought him great fame but also earned him the respect and admiration of the people. In each of these lines, he would have wonderfully expressed the problems caused by alcohol in the lives of men.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan married Shyama in 1926 at the age of 19. Shyama, who lived with Harivansh Rai Bachchan for only about ten years, died of tuberculosis in 1936. After being alone for five years, he remarried in 1941 to a woman named Teji Sri. They had two dark children, Amitabh and Ajit.
