Khushwant Singh was born on February 2, 1915, to a Sikh family in Hadali, Punjab, India. His father’s name was Sir Shoba Singh. He became a renowned architect in Delhi. Khushwant Singh built many beautiful buildings during British rule.
He completed his schooling at the “Modern School” in New Delhi and completed his bachelor’s degree at Lahore Government College. He then studied law at King’s College, London, where he continued his career as a lawyer in the Lahore High Court in 1947.

He started his career as a writer and wrote his first novel, Mano Majra. Even after writing this book was not published for some reason. Later, the publication “Curve Press” announced a competition for an Indian novel. He sent “Mano Majra” for it. The book that won the first prize in the competition was later renamed “Train to Pakistan” and published in editions.
The story of this novel, which is said to be one of the most admirable to date, is a masterpiece written with a focus on the India-Pakistan divide. When Bharatanatyam is divided into India and Pakistan, a village on the border will wonderfully reveal how Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs who used to be mothers, children, and brothers become deformed.
It is said to be a historical example of a journey towards an egalitarian society beyond caste and religious fundamentalism.
Khushwant Singh started the monthly magazine “Yojana” in 1957 to raise socio-economic awareness among the grassroots in India. It is currently published in more than ten languages, including Tamil and English. From 1979 to 1980 he was the editor of India Illustrated Weekly.
